Screening V Ciutat Morta
Ciutat Morta (Dead City), directed by Xavier Artigas and Xapo Ortega (2013), 120min.
“One of the worst cases of police corruption in Barcelona”
800 people illegally occupy an old movie theater in Barcelona in order to screen a documentary. They rename the old building after a girl who committed suicide in 2011: Cinema Patricia Heras. Who was that girl? Why did she kill herself and what does the city have to do with it? That's exactly what the squatting action is about: letting everyone know the truth about one of the worse corruption cases in Barcelona, the dead city.
-----
The night of the 4th of February 2006 ended with a police charge in the center of Barcelona. It happened near a squatted theater where a party was going on. Amidst the police charge several objects fell from the top of the squatted house. According to the declarations of the Barcelona Major to the radio a few hours later, one of the policemen, who was not wearing a helmet, ended up in a coma due to the impact of a flower pot.
The arrests that followed this incident are a tale of vengeance and corruption.
Three young south-americans are gravely and relentlessly tortured as well as being deprived of their freedom for 2 years, while waiting for a trial where it barely seemed important who was the culprit and who did what.
Furthermore, two young people who were also arrested that night weren't even in the area where the incident in the squatted house happened. They were arrested in a nearby hospital and found to be suspects due to their clothes and appearance.
A depiction of torture, racism, corruption and impunity within the police corps and the justice system.
