Familienangelegenheiten
Documenting the group exhibition Familienangelegenheiten (“Family Matters”) at Kunstverein Hildesheim, the book presents essays from the fields of sociology and art history on today’s understanding of the term “family.” Questions concerning altered concepts and models of families in times of financial crises and curtailing of social services establish the context for the exhibition. What does “family” mean today, when the model of the heterosexual nuclear family which has been dominant since the beginning of industrialization is increasingly disintegrating? How does the communal approach to family life relate to a lifestyle which otherwise is predominantly characterized by individualism?
